What to Look for When Buying a New ToothbrushIf you head to the drug store or a superstore for the purpose of buying a new toothbrush, you may want to give yourself ample time to make a choice. The problem that people run into is the wide variety of toothbrushes to choose from.

Hard or soft bristled brushes, manual or electric toothbrushes, toothbrushes that play music to help you brush for a certain amount of time to fill up the shelves of these stores. Instead of just grabbing any toothbrush, take some time before going to the store to learn what to look for.

Break It Down to Four Factors

While there are probably dozens of choices when it comes to buying a toothbrush, there are 4 areas that are most important to consider. Find a toothbrush that fits into these areas to narrow down the number of choices you have.

•  Electric or manual - The first decision makes you also think about the cost. An electric toothbrush is more expensive, but it also does a better job at cleaning the plaque and bacteria from the teeth. Both electric and manual toothbrushes are effective tools, so this decision is mostly about budget.
•  Bristles - Soft bristled brushes are the most effective tools for cleaning plaque from the teeth. A harder bristled brush can end up damaging the teeth and gums when not used properly.
•  Size and shape - The toothbrush needs to fit the mouth of the user. Take the time to think about the size of toothbrush you need. The shape and angle of the handle are another thing to consider. The right shape can help you reach some of the teeth better than others.
•  ADA Seal of Approval - This seal shows that the toothbrush is acceptable to this organization. While there are some toothbrushes that will work that do not have the seal, it is a good way to narrow down the choices you face.

It is important to find a toothbrush that will work for you. Take some time to look at the many different types before choosing. While it is important to choose the right brush, it is also important to make sure that you take care of it properly and change it out regularly for the best results.
