Why are Teeth Extracted?

Some of the most common reasons teeth are extracted include:

  • The tooth is severely decayed.
  • The patient is suffering from advanced periodontal disease and has lost supportive bone.
  • The tooth has been fractured or broken in such a way that it is impractical to repair with a dental crown.
  • The tooth is impacted (stuck beneath the gums).
  • The tooth is poorly positioned.
  • The tooth is non-functional and requires replacement with a dental prosthesis such as a dental bridge.
  • The tooth is an extra tooth causing malocclusion.
  • An orthodontist would like to improve the patient's occlusion and finds the removal of a tooth necessary.

Simple and Surgical Tooth Extractions

A simple extraction is done with an elevator tool and forceps. Simple refers to the ability to cleanly lift the tooth out of the socket without breakage. A simple extraction can easily turn into a surgical extraction.

A surgical extraction means that it is necessary to make incisions in the gum tissue to remove the tooth. This is necessary when the tooth has fractured below the gum line or in such a way that we cannot get a solid grasp on the portion remaining, or if the tooth is impacted.

Tooth extractions are a common procedure performed in our dental office. Typically, they can be performed using local anesthesia.

All patients are given home care instructions following their extraction. In most situations, over the counter pain medication is all that is necessary, though in certain situations, we may prescribe stronger medicine. We will want the patient to be aware of the amount of bleeding that occurs after their extraction and pay special attention to anything that seems out of the ordinary. We will provide you with information on how to reduce swelling and inflammation.
