Unfortunately, tooth loss is a part of life for millions of Americans. When a patient loses all or most of their teeth, it can make ordinary tasks, like chewing food and speaking, very difficult. At Winning Smile Dental Group, we offer several tooth replacement treatments, including dentures, to restore the function and aesthetics of a patient’s smile.

What Are Dentures?

Dentures are replacements for missing teeth that are removable, aesthetically pleasing, and more comfortable than ever. There are two main types of dentures: full and partial. A full denture consists of prosthetic teeth set in a flesh-colored acrylic base that fits over your gums.
Dr. Polly Reese may recommend a full denture if you are missing most or all of your teeth. A partial denture is used to replace one or more missing teeth that are adjacent to one another. The denture is held in place by metal clasps that attach to the surrounding teeth.

A full denture for the top arch usually covers the palate as well. A lower arch denture is shaped like a horseshoe to accommodate your tongue and prevent certain problems with speech. It may take a while to adjust to your denture. Issues with speech and chewing are common at first. You may even feel awkward or uncomfortable for the first few weeks. It will take some practice to properly chew food. Over time, the muscles in your jaw and cheeks will adapt to your new set of prosthetic teeth. If problems with speech and food persist, be sure to contact Dr. Polly Reese.

Do Dentures Look Natural?

The dentures we provide at Winning Smile Dental Group will look natural, and give you the smile you deserve. While dentures will never quite feel like your natural teeth, we still want them to look as natural as possible. The color of your dentures can play a large part in how they look. Dr. Polly Reese can help you choose the right shade that best compliments your desired results. Getting the right fit is also a crucial part of a natural look. With the right fit, we can eliminate embarrassing slips and uncomfortable moments. Dr. Polly Reese can offer you advice on wearing your dentures and make sure there is a proper fit.

How Long Do Dentures Last?

Over time, your dentures will need to be remade, rebased, or relined. This is unavoidable. Your gum tissue and underlying bone will deteriorate without teeth or dental implants. These changes can cause your dentures to loosen, and irritate your gums. Luckily, Dr. Polly Reese has a few care tips that can help your dentures last longer!
•  Be sure to handle your dentures with care. Place a towel or basin of water underneath your denture when handling the appliance.
•  Be sure to brush your dentures and gums daily. Brushing your dentures will eliminate food particles and keep them sparkling! Brushing your gums will eliminate trapped bacteria and reduce your chances of infection. This also stimulates circulation in the tissues and slows down the process of deterioration.
•  Be sure never to let your denture dry out. This can cause it to crack or become brittle. Also, be sure to avoid placing your denture in hot water, as this can cause it to warp.
